God or Fear

“All who take refuge in the Lord are truly happy!” Psalm 2:12

“Have you read some of the details of the health care program?” asked Francie to her husband, Rick.

“What do you mean,” he asked.

“Now it comes out that a couple making $62,040 will receive $9,024 in federal subsidies to help pay for their health-insurance premiums!”

“Why would a couple making that kind of money need assistance to pay for their health care premiums?”

“Because they are outrageous, that’s why. At first I thought, so what, it’s just more government mumbo jumbo. But then my friend, Dottie, the accountant told me what it means. The $9.024 is coming from taxpayers!”

“That’s outlandish, Francie. So, all the millions of people who make $62,040 and less will cost taxpayers (themselves) millions in payments to the insurance companies and that’s how the new health care program is being paid?”

“Yes. Plus the premiums also cost the couple several thousand a year. One of my friends said they would pay more than $1,000 per year as their share in premiums plus over $8,800 in taxpayer premiums for their policy.”

The government’s spending is spiraling out of control as wages remain stagnant, taxes increase and cost of living goes through the roof. Fear sets into the hearts of people as they clutch desperately onto any extra pennies in their budgets. Who can save us from this cataclysmic situation? Only God can.

When Jesus began his ministry the Roman government was controlling the Israelites free to tax them, punish them, kill and torture them, including murder as sport in the coliseum. Facing this horrible situation, Jesus did not tell his apostles that they should get together and destroy the Roman government. He did not say “I am sorry they are so cruel. But don’t worry, I have the power to change all that and make life better for all of you.”

Instead, the LORD spoke of his own death followed by His resurrection. He spoke of forgiveness, love, praying for each other and sharing the Good News of the Gospel. Followers of Christ were routinely arrested, beaten, flogged, stoned and killed. Jesus did not try to change that. His focus was and is on eternal life with Him. After all, this world and everything in it will go up in smoke one day. In our world of confusion, deceit, fraud and disappointment, the ONLY absolute is God’s word.

2 Corinthians 9:8  And God is able  to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.

Psalm 23 The Lord is my Shepherd; I have all that I need.

Ephesians 3:14-21 When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.

James 1:2-8 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

Ephesians 6:10-18  Finally, let the mighty strength of the Lord make you strong. Put on all the armor that God gives, so you can defend yourself against the devil’s tricks. 12We are not fighting against humans. We are fighting against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world. So put on all the armor that God gives. Then when that evil day comes, you will be able to defend yourself. And when the battle is over, you will still be standing firm. Be ready! Let the truth be like a belt around your waist, and let God’s justice protect you like armor. Your desire to tell the good news about peace should be like shoes on your feet. Let your faith be like a shield, and you will be able to stop all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Let God’s saving power be like a helmet, and for a sword use God’s message that comes from the Spirit.Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God’s people.

John 14:25-27 “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid?
The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?

Philippians 4:6-7 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
